This article is about orange county not allowing a bunch of students without proof of immunization go to school. There has been a recent outbreak of the measles, and they don't want other students to be infected. Dr. Eric Handler, the Orange County public health officer, is quoted saying "If there is a case in the school and their child is not immunized, they will be removed from the school for 21 days. From and epidemiological stand point, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, this is a necessary measure." They have been watching their students closely, because the kindergarten immunizations have decreased a lot since 2002, and they don't want the disease to spread. They are keeping some out of school, so that others may thrive.
This is kind of wrong in my opinion. they shouldn't be able to take them out of school because they haven't been vaccinated. The child's life doesn't deserve to be ruined, just because their parents chose not to give them their shots. I'm not saying I want everyone else to get sick, but the kids who aren't allowed in school should get some sort of online class, at least, or a tutor to teach them this stuff at home.
Yay! English!

PRO/CON: Will the release of the CIA torture report put Americans at risk?
This article is about the CIA torturing its suspects, and how it might put American lives in danger. If terrorists or extremists find out about the US government torturing their people, they might want to hurt the US even more. Some of the CIA is trying to defend themselves, and Diane Feinstein is quoted saying the CIA "was encouraged by political leaders and the public to do whatever it could to prevent another attack," The CIA is worried that this is going to give extremist groups like those of al-Qaida just another reason to attack us, and another thing to add to their for things that America has done wrong, so that they can recruit more people to be in their terrorist groups. The CIA wishes that their interrogation methods would have stayed a secret.
This article definitely makes me think. While I do think the people need to know how the CIA is treating these suspects, it could have put America in harms way. Terrorist are looking for new ways to recruit people in their group, and they have found a new on in these reports. I'm glad the people know now, I'm also concerned though. I hope this doesn't lead to any extreme terrorist attacks, or any deaths.

*For U.S. cartoonists, sorrow and anger over the massacre at Charlie Hebdo.
This article is about U.S. cartoonists being angry about the massacre at Charlie Hebdo. To express their anger, and make people think, they have been drawing political cartoons that offend people. These threats have gotten them lots of hate and death threats. Ann Telanes is quoted saying "a really well-drawn cartoon should grab you quickly." She, and many other cartoonists, think that cartoons are one of the best way to get info out to the people, because it catches the readers attention.
I think this is a really good article. I've never thought much about the people who make political cartoons and such, but I definitely will now. This shows their side, why they make these cartoons. I think cartoons do catch readers attentions, and I agree that its logical to use them to get to people to pay attention. and i'm glad they can use these drawings to express their anger about the massacre in Charlie Hebdo.

SpaceShipTwo crashes during test flight, killing one, injuring another
This article is about the crash of the SpaceTwoShip. In the crash, one person was injured, and one person was killed. The article focuses less on the fact of the injury and death though, and more on the fact that the company, Virgin Galactic, owned by a British billionaire named Richard Branson, who also owns Virgin Mobile, Virgin American Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic Airlines, is worried that this might decrease the amount of people who want to invest in the project. Marco Caceres, senior analyst and director of space studies with the Teal group, a company the studies aerospace and defense businesses, is quoted saying, "people will now realize this is space travel, and you're getting into a rocket." The company wants to be able to start taking people into space, but Micheal Blades, and analyst at Frost & Sullivan, has said "this passenger thing probably won't happen this decade."
I think the concept is really cool. Being able to take people to space for a short trip would be really awesome. I also think that the crash was unfortunate, but progress can lead to loss. I hope they continue to get the funding necessary. Great article, great idea, I hope they can eventually do this.

*States act to help high school athletes avoid heat stroke, and other bad injuries.*
This article is about the heat, and other things, effecting the athletes in a negative way, such as heat stroke, and other injuries. It's becoming a very serious issue, especially with school starting earlier and earlier, so the athletes are having to become used to the heat. Not just the heat though, there is also overuse of joints and muscles for athletes in certain sports. These athletes are supposed to take break, to let everything rest for a while, but with parents and coaches pushing them harder, it can be more difficult. Mark Hyman, a sports journalist, is quoted saying, "before, when kids played sports, and they knew their elbow or knee hurt, they stopped playing. With adult involvement, parents and coaches have been the ones to push them beyond physical limits."
I think this is a good article, with solid points. Athletes are expected to push themselves farther than they should have to. They are expected to practice and practice, even if it means they hurt themselves. They have to practice in every weather condition, and its not good for them. Athletes need breaks from practicing, especially if its hot outside.

In some states, the difference between poor and very poor is a big problem.
This article is about how the richest states have the highest population of very poor people. States like Hawaii, Maryland, and Massachusetts are examples of these rich states. Although they have have low percentages of poverty, a high percentage of those poor people, are deeply poor. In 2013, a poor family was a family of 4 living off of $23,550 a year, and a deeply poor family, was a family of 4 living off of only $12,000. Most researchers believe this is because the people are living in bad communities, or because the government is working on giving them money instead of finding them a job.
I think this article has many good points. There are lots of people in poverty, and lots of people in deep poverty. I agree that it does probably have to do with a bad environment, and the fact that instead of helping people get jobs, the government is just paying them. Yes, the money given is helping at the time, but its not go to have as much of an effect in the future. They need to help these people find homes, and make money of their own, too. They cant have people relying on the government to live, its not good for either parties.

*U.S. and Britain sending troops to combat Ebola in West Africa.*
This article is about the U.S. and Britain sending troops to West Africa to fight against the Ebola outbreak. Ebola is deadly to 50-80 percent of the people who get it, and it has killed more than 2,000 people since it was detected in March. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) about 152 of the doctors and workers, in Liberia alone, have come down with Ebola, and 79 of them have died. The WHO is quoted saying, "When patients are turned away at Ebola centers, they have no choice but to return home to their communities and homes," meaning that they leave, and spread it even more. They have been opening new treatment centers to control the spread of the disease, but every time the open one, it fills up almost immediately.
I think that its great that they are sending people to help out with the Ebola out break. Britain and America have more resources than West Africa, and its good that they're helping. I hope they are taking the right precautions against it when letting these doctors and others back into their countries. Ebola is a serious disease, and spreading it even further wouldn't be a good thing. I'm happy they are helping though, and this is a great article.
